Motherly Advice

Posting # 8

"In speaking of mothers generally, I especially wish to praise and encourage young mothers. The work of a mother is hard, too often unheralded work [. . .] often the greatest challenge of all for a young mother is simply fatigue. Through these years, mothers go longer on less sleep and give more to others with less personal renewal for themselves than any other group I know at any other time in life. It is not surprising when the shadows under their eyes sometimes vaguely resemble the state of Rhode Island.

Do the best you can through these years, but whatever else you do, cherish that role that is so uniquely yours and for which heaven itself sends angels to watch over you and your little ones. Husbands—especially husbands—as well as Church leaders and friends in every direction, be helpful and sensitive and wise. Remember, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven"

"Because She is Mother." Holland, Jeffrey R. 1997 May. Ensign. 35. http://lds.org/ensign/1997/05/because-she-is-a-mother?lang=eng

Becoming a new mother is both exciting and a bit nerve wracking.  As mothers who have gone before, I'd love for this post to contain your thoughts/advice on motherhood.  I think everyone benefits from others experiences so please share!

I would love for you to leave five or more things you have learned being a mother.  They can include anything from traditions, techniques, learning moments you've had with your little ones, discipline, links to great sites, or practical things like what diapers and bottles to buy.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom and may you continue to be blessed on your adventure of motherhood!

When I was in the Relief Society Presidency in Georgia I came across this fantastic article in the Ensign talking about feeling overwhelmed as a mother having small kids, after reading the Book of Mormon and reading King Benjamin's talk where he talks about feeding the hungary, clothing the naked, preaching the gospel she felt super overwhelmed than the spirit came into her mind and said "but you are feeding the hungary, clothing the naked and preaching the gospel." You are a mother. You are doing this every day with your children and that is the most important place to do these things. She remembered the scripture that Elder Holland mentioned There is a Time and A Season. Our season right now is with our children, our humanitarian, community service good intentioned efforts are with our children, we are saving souls as we serve, clothe, feed and teach them. This helped me so much and still helps me, when I get focused on other things or loose perspective or think I am not doing enough or could be doing something more worth while in OUR WORLD, and with others.

Great insight Deirdre! My biggest advice on motherhood is probably to always remember who's the mom and who's the kid/(baby). So many moms let their babies take over their lives and control them and they get overwhelmed. Although some moms think otherwise babies don't know what's best for them. YOU decide when they will eat, YOU decide when they will sleep, YOU decide when it's time for them to get up. YOU teach them, don't let them teach you how to raise them. Moms are so much happier and can be a better mother when they have control and SLEEP! It's all about training them and discipline, then it's so much easier to shower them with love! It's definently the harder road, but so much more rewarding in every aspect.
